Shakespeare had been eight years more youthful than her. If they married in 1582 he had been eighteen and she had been twenty-six. She had been expecting during the right time and whatever their relationship was like – which we don’t know any single thing about – he had no alternative apart from to marry her as it had been socially unsatisfactory for a lady of her standing to possess a young child without having to be married.
